Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost is an adventure cum
torture horror film about a group of tourists who become embroiled in organ
harvesting.
This isn’t like a gore-fest as in
the Hostel and Saw films, but a more slowly paced film, with time to flesh out
the characters, who you do end up rooting for. Some characters do get on the
nerves a bit with their behaviour, but that’s the good thing about the
character development (which isn’t a lot, to be fair), but it just makes you
root for someone in the end. The film grabs your attention from the start,
where it leaves you feeling queasy as to what will befall these characters.
Even when they are enjoying themselves there is a sense of threat and doom for
their outcome. The scenes are well acted and the villains are all too real,
thus adding to the threat because of the believability. And when the scenes of
murder and torture do arrive (the film has a big build up which takes up most
of the running time) they are shocking because of how suddenly they start.
Because of the build-up, it relies more on atmosphere than on gore, not to say
that it doesn’t feature some good effects. All in all, this is a well made
film, with lots of action and suspense. A solid, well acted horror film.
