I am a fan of exploitation films, especially the grindhouse
films. However, this to me felt like a cheap homage to them, cheap in a bad
way, mind you. I wasn’t really expecting much, and I wasn’t really impressed by
the film. It has to look cheap and grainy, that’s part of the grindhouse
aesthetic. But, it looked like it was filmed on a modern camera, then converted
to grainy in post-production. That left it feeling too modern and, another
major thing about this film is that it’s not very sleazy. These films were very
sleazy, probably the definition of sleazy. They had violence and sex by the
bucketload. This has some violence, which isn’t very graphic, apart from one
scene in a toilet which is greatly graphic. However, apart from that, it looks
badly cheap. If it was not trying to be a grindhouse film, then it would have
seemed worse because the acting was a bit better than amateur and most of the
effects were shoddy. It looked like it was trying to imitate the grindhouse
feel, did look like it was filmed with love for the sub-genre, but it wasn’t
nearly as good as those films it was trying to become, which is sad. It’s not a
bad film, but it could have been better.
