SKINS

Skins

My take on Skins is that the show is best in its first two seasons: relatable characters and funny situations, and then it dips into much murky waters, with the second generation becoming a bit more less likable than the first and then the third generation becoming even less likeable, but they still remain quite relatable. Characters aren’t always meant to be likeable and I get that, but I don’t know, the later season didn’t really have that much of an appeal. It was probably because they all had to live up to the first generation, which was so solid and great that you wanted all the cast back and it was sad not having them back. However, I feel that the first generation really ended on a high note. Although the seventh, and final, season had the good fortune of giving us back some of the characters from the first and second generation, the season as a whole was just ok. I liked Effie’s story much better than the other two, however the other two did have their good points to them. The characters were a bit changed from what they were when we had seen them last and that was quite a shock, to see them grow up. Obviously, it would have been extra great if we had seen all the characters and I was waiting for Sid (SPOILER) to find Cassie in New York, but what we got was ok. Just ok. The direction also took a much more, if you like, mature tone, being much more serious than before, which was a real departure from the down-to-earth feel of the seasons past. It was extremely glossy. Overall, I can see why the show is controversial: the sex and language are quite graphic and obviously it is meant for teens and adults, but if you can get past that the show is quite unique in that it shows a really grounded and real-life like experience (well, the first generation, at least). I like the series and would recommend it. E4 has a knack for producing these kinds of shows, as their target demographic is predominantly of the teen-age, but they’ve simply gone and done it with Skins.
