Poltergeist (1982)

Knowing before watching Poltergeist of the terrible tragedies that happened behind the scenes among other things, I knew this movie would be a very different watch. Different to the usual movies in that knowing what happened to some actors, it would be more 'real'.

Poltergeist is a movie directed by Tobe Hopper (of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame) and Steven Spielberg as producer, and especially the first few minutes of Poltergeist feel like something out of a Spielberg movie. The only scenes that for me thinking about Tobe Hooper were the (spoiler) man peeling his face off and the skeletons towards the end, although Indiana Jones has them as well (end of spoiler).

The movie surprised me in its attitude to the paranormal, mainly how the character of the mother reacted to it.

Nowadays, because of there being many paranormal horror movie tropes like in Poltergeist in newer movies, it may seem a bit cliche, and some of the visual effects haven't ages very well. However, I didn't mind that at all. I loved that, in fact, and there are some great visual effects to counter the aforementioned ones.

All the actors give great performances, and this movie, as stated at the start with the tragic circumstances of the actors, makes it feel more 'real'. Poltergeist is a sad movie if you watch knowing the background.

The movie also has some creepy scenes, with whispering and a clown doll with a freakish face, it certainly isn't a children's movie. I really liked it.

Overall, Poltergeist is a great movie and I highly recommend.
